Ben and I were headed out for one beer and a quick bite to eat in Brugge around 9:00 last night. Next thing we know it’s almost 4:00AM when we started home. We ran into a group of Belgian folks and they invited us to play a table game. We are in Belgium to do cycling stories, and what are the odds we would end up hanging out with the one elite pro cyclist from Brugge? Jens Keukeleire rides for the Orica GreenEDGE cycling team, but is on the mend after breaking his collar bone. He was out with his sister Sien and friends Folkert, Alex, and Jelle. They taught us a game, and the next thing we knew the doors of the bar were locked and we were all inside with the owners dancing and laughing. We really hope Jens makes it to Missoula this fall to race Rolling Thunder!
After a solid 3 hours of sleep Ben and I packed up and pedaled south to the town of Kortrijk (we pretty much rode across the entire country) to meet up with former pro cyclist Nico Mattan.
Such a Belgium experience. We had beers with a Belgian pro cyclist one evening. The next morning we woke up, ate waffles, and then rode in the wind and rain on signed bike routes to meet up with another pro cyclist and drink more beer.
